8th Pay Commission update: Bringing positive news for central government employees, the Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the formation of the 8th Pay Commission. This decision paves the way for a salary increase for government staff.

Over one crore central government employees and pensioners are eagerly anticipating the establishment of the 8th Pay Commission, which will reassess and update their basic pay, allowances, pensions, and other benefits.

Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission have already been implemented. Details regarding the 8th Pay Commission, including its composition, will be announced by the government at a later stage.

The implementation of the 7th Pay Commission brought significant changes to salary structures, allowances, and pensions for central government employees, ensuring fair compensation for both active staff and retirees.

Central Pay Commissions are generally constituted every ten years to review and propose changes to pay scales, allowances, and benefits for central government employees, taking into account economic factors such as inflation.

The 7th Pay Commission, set up by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on February 28, 2014, submitted its report on November 19, 2015, with the changes coming into effect from January 1, 2016.

If this timeline is followed, the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission are likely to be implemented starting January 1, 2026. Like its predecessors, it is expected to introduce revisions in salaries, including updates to the Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) for pensioners.

Rohitaashv Sinha from King Stubb & Kasiva shared, “The 8th Pay Commission is expected to propose an impressive 186% hike in the minimum basic pay, potentially raising it to INR 51,480 per month. The fitment factor for this is estimated to be 2.86. These changes are likely to be introduced through the Central Civil Services (Revised Pay) Rules, 2025, resulting in improved pensions and other retirement benefits such as EPF, Gratuity, and more. Additionally, it may suggest updates to salary structures for government employees.”
