Why Did We Lose in Those Seats? The Anticipation Surrounding the Kurian Committee Meeting
The Lok Sabha elections have concluded, and the NDA has taken power. Compared to the past, opposition parties have also strengthened. In this context, the Congress Party has begun a post-mortem analysis of the election results. To investigate why the expected results in Telangana were not achieved in the recent Lok Sabha elections, the AICC appointed a fact-finding three-member committee led by JP Kurian, which has arrived in Hyderabad. PCC Vice President Niranjan welcomed the committee members. Along with Kurian, Rakibul Hussain and Pargat Singh are also members of this committee. For the next three days, they will hold consecutive meetings with senior party leaders at Gandhi Bhavan. Today, they will meet separately with MPs and candidates who contested and lost in Lok Sabha seats.
During these meetings, they will inquire about several key issues. Mainly, the committee members will investigate the reasons for the defeat in Lok Sabha constituencies where Congress was expected to win. On the second day, they will meet with party MLAs. They will inquire about the performance of leaders on the ground and the reasons for the defeat in assembly segments during the Lok Sabha elections. On the third day, they will gather opinions from district Congress presidents. It is still unclear whether the committee members will go on field visits afterward. The leadership is mainly probing the reasons behind the party’s defeat in constituencies like Chevella, Malkajgiri, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Medak, and Secunderabad.
It is reported that the committee will analyze why the Congress lost in the Lok Sabha elections, despite winning in several assembly segments within these constituencies in the assembly elections held last November. The party has already advised the leaders of these constituencies to attend with relevant information. There are also allegations that local leaders in some assembly segments did not perform well, and details about them will be collected. The committee is expected to ask for information on the leaders’ performance, the measures taken for poll management, the manner in which the party’s campaign was conducted, and the coordination among the leaders.
