The agenda may also include strategies for countering the opposition’s aggressive stance on several issues, including alleged bias by the Election Commission and national security concerns following the recent Pahalgam terror attack and subsequent Operation Sindoor.
Expanded NDA Meetings: A Post-Election Strategy
Since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the format of the BJP’s internal meetings has evolved. With the BJP falling short of a full majority and forming a government with support from its allies, the weekly BJP parliamentary meetings have been expanded to include members of allied parties under the NDA umbrella.
PM Modi had previously addressed such an expanded meeting on July 2, marking a new phase of NDA coordination. However, since then, no similar meetings have been held despite heightened political activity and disruption in Parliament. Tuesday’s meeting is therefore expected to carry added significance.
Parliament in Deadlock: Pahalgam Attack and Electoral Roll Row
The Monsoon Session of Parliament, currently underway, has been marred by repeated disruptions and protests led by the opposition bloc. The only substantive business conducted so far has been a two-day discussion around the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor — a military response aimed at eliminating the perpetrators behind the deadly incident.
The attack in Pahalgam, which led to multiple civilian casualties, has prompted outrage and national debate. Operation Sindoor was launched swiftly by Indian security forces to neutralize the terrorists involved. The Prime Minister is expected to address the military operation and likely use this platform to reinforce the government’s commitment to national security.
In addition, PM Modi may be felicitated by NDA MPs for his leadership during the crisis and for the strong military response, according to media reports.
Apart from security issues, the opposition has also raised concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar. The Election Commission’s move has been criticized as allegedly politically motivated, with claims of unfair advantages being granted to the ruling alliance. Although no official candidate has been announced yet, the NDA is expected to finalize its nominee soon, especially given its comfortable majority in the electoral college, which consists of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs. The total strength of this college is currently 782, giving the ruling alliance a decisive edge.
If the opposition also puts forward a candidate — which political analysts deem highly likely — a contest will be held on September 9. In preparation, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and a few senior BJP leaders are said to be coordinating closely with allies to ensure unity in the voting process.
PM’s Messaging and Governance Strategy
In past addresses to the parliamentary party, PM Modi has typically emphasized discipline, development agendas, and outreach strategies for MPs to take back to their constituencies. Tuesday’s meeting is likely to follow a similar pattern, with a focus on defending government policies and preparing MPs for the heated political atmosphere leading up to the Vice Presidential election.
Sources also suggest that the Prime Minister may outline the government’s legislative priorities for the remainder of the session and possibly the rest of the year. This may include updates on economic policies, welfare schemes, and diplomatic initiatives.
