The suspended leaders include prominent BRS figures K. T. Rama Rao and T. Harish Rao. The decision has intensified the ongoing political battle between the ruling Congress government and the opposition BRS, with both sides continuing to make strong allegations against each other.
The latest confrontation in the Assembly followed several days of heated exchanges and disruptions. The dispute was linked to allegations surrounding an incident in Siddipet, where Congress leaders alleged that BRS workers conducted a “purification” ritual after a Dalit protest. The allegations quickly became a major political issue, with Congress leaders describing the reported act as discriminatory and offensive to the Dalit community. BRS leaders rejected the allegations and questioned the material being presented by the ruling party.
The issue eventually reached the Assembly, where BRS legislators repeatedly raised their demands and protested against the Congress government. The proceedings were disrupted for several consecutive days, creating tension inside the House. Minister D. Sridhar Babu moved a motion seeking action against the protesting BRS legislators. Following the motion, Telangana Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar suspended 21 BRS MLAs for the rest of the Monsoon Session.
The suspension affects a significant portion of the BRS legislative strength in the Telangana Assembly. The party has 27 MLAs in the House, meaning that most of its elected representatives have now been suspended from the ongoing proceedings. Apart from K. T. Rama Rao and T. Harish Rao, several senior BRS leaders and former ministers are among those facing suspension.
The BRS strongly objected to the action and accused the Congress government of attempting to silence the opposition. K. T. Rama Rao and other senior leaders met Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla after their suspension and raised concerns over the developments in the Assembly. KTR also rejected the allegations made by the Congress and claimed that some of the material being presented against the BRS was not genuine. He said the party would consider legal options regarding the allegations.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, meanwhile, has taken a strong position on the controversy. The Chief Minister criticised the alleged incident and said the government would treat the matter seriously. The government has indicated that the investigation could involve provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita as well as the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. A senior police officer has also been assigned to examine the allegations connected with the controversy.
The political dispute comes at a time when relations between the Congress government and BRS opposition have become increasingly confrontational. Earlier during the Assembly session, BRS leaders had protested outside the legislature over alleged police treatment of their party members. BRS leaders claimed that women legislators were also mistreated during the protest. The issue added another layer of tension between the opposition and the government.
The Telangana High Court had earlier directed the state police not to prevent BRS MLAs from entering the Assembly to participate in legislative proceedings. The court’s intervention came after concerns were raised over alleged police action against BRS legislators. The developments have therefore expanded the political debate beyond the Assembly floor, involving questions about opposition rights, police conduct and the functioning of the legislature.
The BJP has also commented on the controversy. BJP floor leader E. Maheshwar Reddy called for the suspension of BRS legislators to be revoked and argued that important issues affecting Telangana should be discussed in the Assembly. The intervention has added another political dimension to the confrontation between the Congress and BRS.
For the Congress government, the controversy has become an opportunity to raise questions about social justice and the dignity of Dalit communities. For the BRS, the suspension has become another major issue with which to attack the Revanth Reddy government. The opposition has argued that the government is using Assembly procedures against political opponents and preventing them from raising public issues.
The latest developments underline the increasingly intense political atmosphere in Telangana. With senior leaders such as KTR and Harish Rao among those suspended, the dispute is likely to remain a major topic of political discussion.
