Recognizing this shift, Andhra Pradesh Tourism has introduced a thoughtful initiative in Vijayawada — the Driver-Cum-Guide training program in collaboration with Rapido.

This program is more than a routine training session. It represents a structural change in how tourism services can be delivered at the ground level. Instead of depending only on professional tour guides, AP Tourism is empowering local drivers to become informed representatives of the state’s history and culture.

Vijayawada, being one of the most visited cities in Andhra Pradesh, receives tourists from across India and abroad. However, one practical challenge often affects visitor experience — communication gaps and lack of contextual information about the places they visit.

The most notable element of the training is the integration of digital translation tools. Drivers were trained to use applications like Bhashini and Google Translate. These tools help them interact with international tourists who may not understand Telugu or Hindi. By using real-time translation support, drivers can answer basic questions, provide directions clearly, and assist visitors without hesitation. This technological inclusion ensures that language is no longer a barrier to hospitality.

Beyond communication, the program places strong emphasis on storytelling. Tourism becomes meaningful when visitors understand the background of a destination — who built it, why it is significant, and what traditions are associated with it. Drivers were trained to narrate the historical and cultural importance of major landmarks in an engaging yet simple manner. This transforms a routine ride into an informative journey.

Instead of silence during travel, tourists can now receive short, interesting explanations about places such as Kanaka Durga Temple, Undavalli Caves, or Prakasam Barrage. Such narration enhances emotional connection and leaves a lasting impression.

The initiative also strengthens professional standards among drivers. Through behavioral training and customer interaction sessions, drivers are guided on how to maintain politeness, patience, and clarity while dealing with diverse tourists. This structured approach improves service quality and ensures consistency in visitor experience.
