Arunachal Pradesh: Unlocking Adventure Tourism Potential

Arunachal to Host 16th Annual Adventure Tourism Convention as India’s Last Shangri-La

The Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) hosted a curtain-raiser in New Delhi for its 16th annual convention, themed “Exploring Arunachal Pradesh: India’s Last Shangri-La.” The Arunachal Pradesh Government, in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Tourism, organized the event. The convention will take place in Tawang from December 3 to 8, aiming to highlight the untapped potential of adventure tourism in the state.

According to ATOAI President Ajit Bajaj, the convention seeks to boost Arunachal’s economic growth while bringing global recognition to its tourism opportunities. The itinerary includes a journey to Tawang via Dirang, visits to Bumla, and the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports. Furthermore, participants will network and share knowledge to explore collaborative possibilities. Bajaj emphasized the importance of reducing the event’s carbon footprint, thereby promoting responsible tourism.

Meanwhile, convention chairperson Oken Tayeng described Arunachal Pradesh as one of the last remaining wilderness areas. He advocated for sustainable tourism activities such as trekking, mountain biking, and mountaineering. To ensure steady and mindful growth, he proposed higher pricing strategies and visitor education, thus preventing over-tourism and protecting local cultures.

Notably, Arunachal Pradesh showcases its vibrant cultures and biodiversity through the traditions of 26 tribes and over 100 sub-tribes. For instance, Tourism Secretary Ranphoa Ngowa highlighted rafting on the Sikang River, paragliding, and unique tribal cuisines as key attractions. Additionally, locals prepare specialties like bamboo-cooked rice and river stone-cooked meat, adding culinary depth to the experience.

Connectivity improvements have unlocked the state’s hidden potential, Tourism Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona explained. Moreover, the Ministry of Tourism is collaborating with ATOAI to develop rescue guidelines and capacity-building programs. These efforts aim to position Arunachal Pradesh as a leading global destination for responsible and sustainable adventure travel.
