Mushtaq Ahmed, the Pakistan leg-spinner and World Cup winner, has been brought on board by the Bangladesh men’s national team as the new spin bowling coach until the end of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and USA. He replaces Rangana Herath in this position, who left the job with the BCB last year after the opening Test against New Zealand. The 53-year-old will join the Bangladesh team ahead of the preparation camp later this month for the T20 series against Zimbabwe.
“It is a great honour for me to be a part of the Bangladesh cricket team as a spin bowling coach. I am looking forward to the role and want to pass my experience to the players because they are very coachable, and I always believe that they are one of the most dangerous teams around,” Mushtaq said in a BCB press release. “They can beat anyone because they have the capability, the resources, and the talent. I will try to instill that belief into them. I am very excited about the opportunity to work with the team,” he concluded.
Mushtaq Ahmed joins Bangladesh as spin bowling coach
Mushtaq, who took 185 Test wickets and 161 ODI wickets in his playing career, has previously served as the spin bowling coach for England (2008-2014), West Indies (2018-19), and Pakistan (2020-22). He also held the position of the Pakistan team’s bowling consultant (2014-16).
Mushtaq Ahmed’s vast experience and expertise in spin bowling make him a valuable addition to the Bangladesh coaching staff. His successful stints with various international teams and his own illustrious playing career provide him with a deep understanding of the game, which he can now impart to the Bangladeshi players. As Bangladesh prepares for the upcoming T20 World Cup, Mushtaq’s guidance and mentorship could play a crucial role in enhancing the team’s performance and achieving success on the global stage.
