Bramayugam Studied in UK Film School; Director Responds
Mammootty’s critically acclaimed horror film Bramayugam continues to make a significant impact beyond Indian cinema, receiving international recognition for its technical brilliance. Recently, a video went viral on social media showcasing how the 2024 horror drama is being used as a case study for sound design at the University of Creative Arts in the United Kingdom.
Directed by Rahul Sadasivan, Bramayugam was one of the most celebrated Malayalam films of 2024, gaining widespread acclaim for its atmospheric storytelling, haunting cinematography, and immersive sound design. The film, shot entirely in black and white, masterfully blended myth, folklore, and sacred mysteries of Kerala, creating an eerie and captivating cinematic experience.
A student from the University of Creative Arts recently shared a video on Instagram, revealing that Bramayugam is being studied as part of the curriculum for sound design. This unexpected recognition of the film on an academic level highlights its exceptional use of audio elements to enhance its horror and suspense. The video quickly caught the attention of director Rahul Sadasivan, who later reshared it as a story on his official Instagram handle.
In an earlier exclusive interview, Rahul Sadasivan reflected on the film’s unique approach, particularly its bold decision to be shot in black and white. “The idea was to tell this story in a unique way; however, it’s not a paranormal plot like my previous one. This has a different kind of horror. It was challenging, but there was never a thought of telling this story in a color format. I felt the decision to shoot in black and white itself was an enlightenment because everyone seems to be excited about it now! I pitched this film with the cast and crew to shoot it in black and white. This is a black-and-white film, and I can’t see it in color,” he said.
Bramayugam featured Mammootty in a bone-chilling lead role, delivering one of his most intense performances. The film also starred Arjun Ashokan and Sidharth Bharathan in pivotal roles. The use of sound played a crucial role in amplifying the film’s unsettling atmosphere, making it a perfect choice for academic discussions on sound design.
The film’s success extends beyond critical appreciation, as it continues to gain recognition in global cinematic circles. The fact that a prestigious international institution is analyzing its sound design as part of its curriculum underscores its artistic and technical excellence. Sound plays a vital role in horror films, and Bramayugam serves as a stellar example of how auditory elements can elevate a film’s impact, immersing the audience in an eerie and suspenseful experience.
Rahul Sadasivan’s direction, combined with the film’s intricate soundscape, effectively transports the audience into the world of Bramayugam, where the horrors lie not just in visual storytelling but in the unseen and the unheard. The film’s ability to build tension through subtle whispers, creaking doors, and an unsettling silence makes it a masterclass in horror filmmaking.
As Bramayugam continues to receive accolades, its influence is extending far beyond its initial release, cementing its place in cinema as an innovative and genre-defining work. With this latest recognition from the University of Creative Arts, it is evident that Bramayugam is not just a film but an experience—one that filmmakers and students alike can learn from.
The film’s legacy is now inspiring the next generation of filmmakers and sound designers, proving that well-crafted storytelling combined with technical brilliance can leave a lasting impact on audiences and the cinematic world alike.
