Ingredients:
- 1 cup gram flour (besan)
- 1/4 cup ghee
- 3/4 cup condensed milk
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
- 1/4 tsp cardamom powder
- A pinch of saffron (optional)
- Chopped nuts (almonds, pistachios) for garnish
Instructions:
- Prepare the Besan Base:
- In a large bowl, combine the gram flour, ghee, and a few spoons of milk to make a crumbly texture. Set aside for 10-15 minutes.
- Make the Sugar Syrup:
- In a small saucepan, add sugar and the remaining milk. Bring it to a gentle simmer until sugar dissolves completely. Add saffron if using, and set aside.
- Cook the Besan Mixture:
- In a heavy-bottomed pan, add the crumbly gram flour mixture and cook on low heat, stirring continuously until golden brown and aromatic (about 10-12 minutes).
- Add condensed milk, mix well, and cook for another 2-3 minutes until it thickens slightly.
- Add Chocolate:
- Lower the heat and add cocoa powder, chocolate chips, and cardamom powder to the besan mixture. Stir continuously until the chocolate melts and the mixture is smooth.
- Combine with Syrup:
- Gradually add the sugar syrup to the mixture, stirring well. Cook for another 5-6 minutes until the mixture thickens and leaves the sides of the pan.
- Set the Mohanthal:
- Grease a plate or tray with ghee and pour the mixture onto it, spreading evenly. Garnish with chopped nuts.
- Let it cool and set for 1-2 hours. Cut into squares and serve.
