Double Ka Meetha

Double Ka Meetha

“Double Ka Meetha” is a traditional Hyderabadi dessert made from bread, milk, and sugar, often garnished with dry fruits and flavored with cardamom. It’s similar to bread pudding but with a distinct Indian twist.

Recipe to make this delicious dessert:

Ingredients:

  • 6 slices of white bread
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup condensed milk (optional for richer flavor)
  • 1/4 cup ghee (clarified butter)
  • 1/4 cup mixed nuts (almonds, cashews, and pistachios), chopped
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • A few saffron strands (optional)
  • Rose water or kewra water (optional, for extra flavor)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Bread:
    • Cut the bread slices into quarters (or triangles).
    • Heat ghee in a frying pan over medium heat.
    • Fry the bread pieces in ghee until they are golden brown and crispy. Remove and set them aside on paper towels to drain excess ghee.
  2. Prepare the Sugar Syrup:
    • In a separate pan, combine the sugar and water.
    • Heat the mixture until the sugar dissolves completely and forms a slightly thick syrup. Add a few saffron strands if using.
    • Add a few drops of rose water or kewra water for additional fragrance.
  3. Prepare the Milk Mixture:
    • In another pan, heat the milk until it comes to a boil.
    • Add condensed milk (if using) and stir well to combine.
    • Add the cardamom powder and let the milk simmer for a few minutes until it thickens slightly.
  4. Assemble the Dessert:
    • In a serving dish, arrange a layer of fried bread pieces.
    • Pour a portion of the sugar syrup over the bread, allowing it to soak in.
    • Pour a portion of the milk mixture over the bread.
    • Sprinkle some of the chopped nuts and raisins over the top.
  5. Repeat Layers:
    • Continue layering with bread pieces, sugar syrup, milk mixture, and nuts until all ingredients are used, ending with a generous topping of nuts and raisins.
  6. Final Touch:
    • Let the assembled dessert rest for at least 30 minutes to allow the bread to soak up the flavors. For the best results, refrigerate it for a few hours before serving.
  7. Serve:
    • Serve chilled or at room temperature. Enjoy the rich, aromatic flavors of Double Ka Meetha!
