The Kadapa district has three lakh hectares of forest land, with red sandalwood spread across two lakh hectares. This means two-thirds of the district’s forest area is covered by this rare and valuable wood. The Lanka Mala, Palakonda, and Seshachalam forests, all in Kadapa, are prime targets for smugglers. Many criminals are stealing this valuable red sandalwood. Despite daily vigilance checks by the Kadapa Police, Forest Department, and Vigilance staff, illegal transport of red sandalwood continues. Smugglers are constantly finding new ways to carry out their operations.
