Falafel Wrap

Falafel Wrap

Falafel wraps are a delicious and popular Middle Eastern dish, consisting of crispy falafel balls wrapped in a flatbread, usually accompanied by fresh vegetables and a variety of flavorful sauces.

Recipe to make your own falafel wraps:

Ingredients

For the Falafel:

  • 1 ½ cups dried chickpeas (or 2 cans of chickpeas, drained and rinsed)
  • 1 small onion, roughly chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup fresh parsley leaves
  • 1 cup fresh cilantro leaves
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2-3 tbsp flour (if needed for binding)
  • Vegetable oil for frying

For the Wrap:

  • Flatbreads or pita bread
  • Lettuce, shredded
  • Tomatoes, diced
  • Cucumber, sliced
  • Red onion, thinly sliced
  • Pickles (optional)
  • Fresh herbs (such as parsley or cilantro)

For the Sauce:

  • Tahini sauce (made by mixing tahini, lemon juice, garlic, and water)
  • Yogurt sauce (made by mixing yogurt, garlic, cucumber, and dill)
  • Hot sauce (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Falafel Mixture:
    • If using dried chickpeas, soak them overnight in plenty of water. Drain well.
    • In a food processor, combine the chickpeas, onion, garlic, parsley, cilantro, cumin, coriander, baking powder, salt, and pepper. Pulse until the mixture is finely ground but not pureed.
    • Transfer the mixture to a bowl. If it’s too wet, add a bit of flour to bind it together. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
  2. Shape and Fry the Falafel:
    • Using your hands or a falafel scoop, shape the mixture into small balls or patties.
    • Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan over medium-high heat. Fry the falafel balls in batches until they are golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.
  3. Assemble the Wrap:
    • Warm the flatbreads or pita bread.
    • Place a few falafel balls in the center of each flatbread.
    • Add shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, cucumber slices, red onion, pickles, and fresh herbs as desired.
    • Drizzle with tahini sauce, yogurt sauce, and hot sauce if using.
  4. Wrap and Serve:
    • Fold the sides of the flatbread over the filling, then roll up tightly.
    • Serve immediately, accompanied by extra sauce if desired.
