Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief and former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu strongly asserted that farmers have always prospered under TDP rule, claiming that their incomes have consistently doubled during his tenure. Addressing a massive gathering at a campaign rally in Andhra Pradesh, Naidu emphasized the party’s deep commitment to the welfare of the agricultural community.
Naidu: “We Treat Agriculture as a Priority”
Naidu stated that agriculture has always been at the heart of the TDP’s governance model. “Whenever TDP comes to power, we ensure that the farmer is respected, empowered, and financially secure. We have a proven track record of doubling farmers’ income through strategic planning, technological support, and investment in rural infrastructure,” he said.
He further criticized the current administration, claiming it has failed to support farmers in meaningful ways, leaving them in debt and distress.
Historical Achievements Under TDP Rule
Naidu recalled several initiatives from previous TDP governments that had a significant impact on the farming sector. These included:
- The implementation of micro-irrigation systems and drip irrigation across drought-prone districts.
- Waiver of agricultural loans for small and marginal farmers.
- Strengthening of agricultural market yards and price support mechanisms.
- Establishing Rythu Bazaars (farmer markets) to eliminate middlemen and increase profits for producers.
“Our policies were data-driven and farmer-centric,” Naidu added. “We brought modern technology to the fields, introduced soil testing, and encouraged organic farming well before it became a national agenda.”
Vision for the Future: Smart Farming and Support Systems
Looking ahead, Naidu unveiled TDP’s roadmap for agricultural development if voted back to power. He proposed the introduction of smart farming techniques using artificial intelligence, drones, and IoT to help farmers increase productivity and reduce costs.
He also promised:
- Zero-interest loans to farmers.
- Crop insurance without hassles.
- Dedicated cold storage facilities in every mandal.
- Direct procurement from farmers at Minimum Support Prices (MSP).
“We will bring back a golden era for the farming community,” he said, drawing loud cheers from the audience.
Criticism of YSRCP Government’s Handling of Agriculture
Naidu accused the current YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government of neglecting agriculture and failing to respond to the needs of farmers. He cited examples of rising input costs, delayed subsidies, and lack of market access.
“Under this regime, farmer suicides have gone up and agricultural growth has slowed down. The rural economy is in a crisis,” he said.
Naidu also criticized the state’s failure to complete irrigation projects that were already underway during his tenure. “If Polavaram was completed by now, lakhs of acres would be under irrigation,” he argued.
Farmers Express Support
Several farmers at the rally voiced their support for Naidu’s return, recalling the assistance they had received during previous TDP regimes.
Ramesh, a farmer from Anantapur, said, “During Naidu’s time, we got input subsidies on time, power supply was better, and there was hope. Now we are burdened with loans and uncertainties.”
Another farmer, Lakshmi Devi from Prakasam district, added, “We need leaders who understand agriculture. Naidu knows the ground realities.”
Election Momentum Grows
With elections approaching, Naidu’s strong pro-farmer pitch is seen as a strategic move to win the confidence of the rural vote bank. Agriculture remains a key issue in Andhra Pradesh, with over 60% of the population depending on farming for livelihood.
Political analysts believe that the TDP’s focus on its governance track record and vision for agricultural reforms may resonate with voters, especially in drought-hit regions.
Conclusion: TDP Bets Big on Agriculture
By placing farmers at the center of its campaign narrative, the TDP is banking on its legacy and future promises to win electoral support. Naidu’s claim that farmers’ income doubled during TDP rule may become a major talking point in the days to come.
Whether this strategy will translate into votes remains to be seen, but it is clear that agriculture will be one of the most debated topics in the upcoming Andhra Pradesh elections.
