Gujarat Titans staged a remarkable comeback to snatch a six-run victory over Mumbai Indians. This marked their third win against the opposition at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Mumbai Indians, with 42 needed from the last six overs and seven wickets in hand, faltered as Gujarat executed their plans flawlessly.
Shubman Gill’s death bowlers, led by Mohit Sharma’s effective slower balls, tightened the screws. Mohit dismissed Dewald Brevis and Tim David, the latter caught spectacularly by David Miller. With 39 needed off three overs, Tilak Varma and David struggled against Rashid Khan, who kept the over boundary-free. Spencer Johnson, despite conceding a six in the penultimate over, struck back by dismissing Varma and Gerald Coetzee.
Hardik Pandya, entering late, ignited hope with a six and a four off Umesh Yadav, reducing the requirement to 9 off four. However, his dismissal to a short ball confirmed Mumbai’s defeat after a promising start.
Rohit Sharma and Brevis initially led MI’s charge, overcoming a quick loss. Their partnership and a fast 20 from Naman Dhir set a solid foundation. Sai Kishore, Gujarat’s standout spinner, limited MI with a key wicket and economical bowling.
Gujarat Titans Wins Match from nowhere
Gujarat’s total of 168 seemed competitive rather than daunting. Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill made promising starts but couldn’t capitalize, hindered by Jasprit Bumrah’s exceptional 3-14 spell. Bumrah’s yorkers and slower balls kept Gujarat’s scoring in check.
Gerald Coetzee, MI’s new pace recruit, complemented Bumrah well, especially in the latter half of Gujarat’s innings. Despite Rahul Tewatia’s late hitting spree, Bumrah and Coetzee managed to limit Gujarat in the final overs.
Hardik Pandya’s return to Ahmedabad, now as an opponent, was met with mixed reactions from the crowd. Despite his efforts, both with the ball and a near-heroic finish with the bat, it wasn’t enough to secure a win for Mumbai.
Brief Scores: Gujarat Titans 168/6 in 20 overs (Sai Sudharsan 45; Jasprit Bumrah 3-14) beat Mumbai Indians 162/9 in 20 overs (Dewald Brevis 46, Rohit Sharma 43; Spencer Johnson 2-25) by 6 runs
