Former Pakistan captain Javeria Khan announced her retirement from international cricket in a social media post on Thursday (March 21). Javeria, who played 116 ODIs and 12 T20Is for Pakistan since making her international debut in 2008, retires after a nearly 16-year career in which she became Pakistan’s second-highest run-getter in the 50-overs format (2285).
“I experienced joy and sorrow, but above all, a sense of great pride kept me going for 15 years,” the 35-year-old wrote in her retirement note. “Wearing Pakistan’s jersey was a privilege far greater than the odds I faced in my cricketing journey.
“Now, as I look back, I find great satisfaction in seeing that the path my friends and I chose to walk was rarely trodden when I started playing professionally but is now open for many girls in Pakistan.
“Things change, scripts change, and new paths beckon,” Javeria wrote. “There is a time for everything, and now I believe is the best time to call it a day and announce my retirement. However, I’ll be available to play league cricket. I will always be grateful to Pakistan for allowing me to hold Pakistan’s flag globally.”
Javeria Khan announces retirement
“On behalf of the PCB and all cricket fans, I extend heartfelt gratitude to Javeria Khan for her invaluable contributions to women’s cricket in Pakistan,” Tania Mallick, PCB’s head of women’s cricket, said in a statement. “Her outstanding records with the bat speak for themselves, and I am confident that her illustrious career will inspire many girls in the country to not just take up this sport but also excel at it for many years.”
While Javeria held the first-ever domestic contracts rolled out by the PCB in 2023, she lost out on a central contract last year due to poor form. After debuting in ODIs in 2008, the former captain played only one match in the 2022 One-Day World Cup in New Zealand. She had also fallen out of favor in the shortest format but made a comeback for the 2023 World Cup, which remains her last international assignment in Pakistan colors.
