Nag Ashwin Reflects on Directing Legends in ‘Kalki 2898 AD’
- Initial Uncertainty: In an interview with Film Companion, Nag Ashwin confessed that working with legendary actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan initially felt somewhat absurd. He recounted his initial anxiety, feeling uncertain about how to direct such experienced performers after a two-year hiatus from filmmaking.
- First Day Jitters: Ashwin shared, “I always found it very silly to try and tell them something about their acting or performance. Especially to Mr. Bachchan. I began my journey with him for this film. The very first day of shooting was with him, and I was just clueless. It had been a long time since I shot anything, around two years, and then the first person I had to direct was Amitabh Bachchan. I was like, ‘What am I going to say? Maybe, ‘Sir, a little slower?’ It sounded ridiculous.”
- Easing into the Role: Despite his initial nervousness, Ashwin soon realized that even the most prominent stars appreciate direction. Both Amitabh and Kamal were keen to follow his guidance, making the directing process smoother than he had anticipated.
He added, “But whether it’s him or Kamal sir, they all desire direction. The more renowned they are, the more open they are to guidance. Even with Prabhas or Deepika, I am aware of their stardom and the expectations of their fans, but I remain oblivious to that while working.”
