Mohanlal Addresses Barroz Criticism: “Critics Haven’t Even Watched the Film”
Mohanlal’s decision to make his directorial debut with the ambitious 3D fantasy adventure Barroz was undoubtedly a bold one. However, the film has received mixed responses from critics and audiences alike.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Mohanlal addressed the criticism, stating that many negative reviews are coming from people who haven’t even watched the film. “The responsibility of supporting a film lies with the audience. I see Barroz as a significant contribution to society after four decades in cinema. Everyone who has watched it has enjoyed it. Unfortunately, some criticize it without understanding it fully. I welcome constructive criticism, but it should be well-informed,” said Mohanlal.
The Drishyam actor also clarified that Barroz was never intended to be compared to Hollywood films or their advanced technologies. “This is simply a unique experiment by me and my exceptionally talented team,” he added.
Directed by Mohanlal, Barroz is based on a story written by Jijo Punnoose, the creator of My Dear Kuttichathan.
ETimes rated the film 2.5 out of 5, describing it as visually appealing, with Santosh Raman’s artwork standing out, especially in the cellar scenes that authentically reflect the 1600s. While the flashback sequences are engaging, they sometimes outshine the modern-day timeline. Mark Killian’s music score complements the film’s rhythm but doesn’t leave a lasting impression. The costumes, though effective in parts, felt mismatched in certain sequences, particularly during a song where Barroz reminisces about young Isabella.
