Najmul Hossain seeks guidance from Shakib, Mahmudullah

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain is looking to former skippers Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah for support as he prepares for the ICC T20 World Cup, set to begin in the USA and West Indies from June 1. Najmul, who was appointed captain across formats on February 12, had previously led the national team in an ICC event when he filled in for Shakib Al Hasan against India and Sri Lanka in India at the ODI World Cup. However, this time, with all eyes on him as Bangladesh kicks off their World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka in Dallas on June 7, Najmul is counting on the experience and guidance of Shakib and Mahmudullah.

“Having such experienced cricketers on the team is a big plus point, especially for those playing in their first World Cup,” Najmul remarked on the BCB Facebook page. “There’s a lot to learn from them. They also have leadership experience, and they will help me during difficult times. Whenever I need something, they come forward. Hopefully, the World Cup will not be an exception,” he added, highlighting the invaluable support he receives from his predecessors.

Reflecting on the significance of playing in a World Cup, Najmul expressed his pride and excitement, emphasizing the dream that every cricketer has to represent their country on such a grand stage. He expressed his desire to enjoy the experience and fulfill his responsibilities to the team, stressing that being captain should not overwhelm him but rather motivate him to excel every day.

Najmul also urged his teammates to concentrate on the process, especially addressing issues at the top of the batting order and in death bowling, ahead of the tournament. Bangladesh’s preparation in the USA started with a setback as they lost their maiden T20I series against the hosts. However, after two defeats, they managed to secure a consolation win by 10 wickets. Najmul emphasized the importance of focusing on the process rather than the outcomes, stating that if the team can concentrate on the small things, the results will follow.

As Bangladesh gears up for the T20 World Cup, Najmul is hopeful for strong support from fans in the USA. He acknowledged the crucial role supporters play in uplifting the team, even during challenging times, and expressed his gratitude for their unwavering backing. “The way supporters follow and stand by cricket keeps the team ahead. Even in difficult times, I hope they continue to support the team,” Najmul concluded, looking forward to a successful campaign in the tournament.
