Nikon Teases Imminent Release of the Z6 III Mirrorless Camera

The long-awaited Nikon Z6 III has been officially teased on Nikon’s YouTube channel, revealing its launch date and hinting at new features. Set to succeed the highly regarded Z6 II, launched in October 2020, the Z6 III will be officially unveiled on June 17 at 5am PT / 8am ET / 1pm BST.

While the price remains undisclosed, it’s expected to be under $3,000 / £2,500 / AU$5,000 to distinguish it from the Nikon Z8. As an owner of the Z6 II, I’ve shared my thoughts on the potential upgrades, so let’s explore what we can anticipate from Nikon’s latest full-frame camera.

Ready to Perform

The teaser starts with a photographer capturing a scene in a savannah at golden hour using the Z6 III and a telephoto lens. A quote then appears: “I could capture before I even pressed the shutter. It’s a game changer.” This indicates the inclusion of pre-capture, a feature found in the Nikon Z8 and added to the Z9 via a firmware update. Pre-capture allows for burst shooting around 0.5 to one second before fully pressing the shutter, aiding in capturing fast-moving subjects.

Though the exact burst-shooting speed of the Z6 III is unknown, the teaser suggests it will excel in high-speed photography, particularly for wildlife.

Enhanced Viewing Experience

A second quote states: “In a bright situation, if I can see better, I can create better,” followed by a scene of a photographer taking portraits on a beach. This hints at an improved electronic viewfinder (EVF). The Z6 II’s 3.69m-dot display with 0.8x magnification could benefit from enhancements, as many competing cameras offer better-performing EVFs.

Intriguing Color Capabilities

The final quote says: “All the beautiful colors in a camera this small is something really exciting,” suggesting the Z6 III will maintain a compact size similar to the Z6 II. The mention of “colors” could indicate improved log color profiles for filmmaking or higher-quality internal video recording capabilities.

While the Z6 III is expected to be an incremental upgrade rather than a revolutionary change, it will bring Nikon’s full-frame all-rounder up to speed for 2024. The full details will be revealed on June 17, and I’ll be eagerly watching for the official announcement.
