To celebrate Christmas, Suriya shared the title teaser for Retro and tweeted, “Merry Christmas Dear All #Retro Summer 2025. Meet y’all soon!” The teaser features Suriya and Pooja Hegde as lovers. Suriya’s character reveals his dark past to his love interest, vowing to leave that life behind and focus on his true purpose—his love.
While Suriya makes this promise, the teaser shows flashes of his violent and angry past. His character tries to break free from his old ways, pursue love, and get married.
The title clearly indicates that Suriya’s past will play a central role in the movie, and the teaser points toward a revenge-driven action thriller. With Karthik Subbaraj’s distinctive direction, Retro has raised anticipation.
In contrast, Suriya’s previous film, Kanguva, directed by Siva, failed to make an impact at the box office. ETimes’ review criticized the film for overwhelming the audience with too much information. While the makers crafted a world with its own unique personality and culture, including village rituals and weapons, they did not fully explore its characters or timelines. The sequences set in the present featured stale jokes and outdated writing, causing the film to lose its ambition in a tangled and confusing narrative.
