Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has officially announced the appointment of former Pakistan fast bowler Aaqib Javed as the new fast-bowling coach of the men’s national cricket team. The announcement was made on Saturday (March 16), and Javed’s appointment is on a short-term basis, with him set to work with the team until the end of the T20 World Cup in June this year.
SLC CEO Ashley De Silva expressed confidence in Javed’s ability to enhance Sri Lankan cricket, stating, “We warmly welcome Aaqib and believe that his immense international experience, both in playing and coaching, will help our bowlers come into good shape ahead of the upcoming major international competitions, such as the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.”
With a career that includes being part of Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup-winning squad and securing over 200 international wickets, Javed brings a wealth of individual excellence and a winning mentality to Sri Lanka’s coaching staff. In his coaching career, he led the Pakistan U19 squad to World Cup victory in 2004 and served as the bowling coach of the senior men’s team during their T20 World Cup win in 2009.
Additionally, Javed played a pivotal role as head coach of the UAE team when they gained ODI and T20 status. Currently, he is associated with the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), holding the positions of Director of Cricket Operations and head coach.
