It’s been nearly ten years since the Andhra Pradesh-Telangana bifurcation. According to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, the deadline for Hyderabad to serve as the joint capital ends on June 2, 2024. From that date, Hyderabad will be the exclusive capital of Telangana. Despite the bifurcation in 2014, asset distribution between AP and Telangana remains incomplete, and promises made at the time have not been fully implemented. This has led to differing arguments between the two states.

AP Leaders’ Demand:
Some AP leaders are pressuring the central government to extend Hyderabad’s status as a joint capital until the pending issues between the Telugu states are resolved, a priority for Telangana CM Revanth Reddy. Former IPS officer and Bharat National Party founder VV Lakshminarayana urged the center to intervene and extend the joint capital status until AP finalizes its stance. He also called on other parties in AP to persuade President Droupadi Murmu. AP Congress Vice President Kolanukonda Shivaji recently demanded that Hyderabad remain a joint capital until 2034.

CM Revanth’s Key Orders:
With the joint capital deadline approaching, Telangana CM Revanth Reddy has ordered the takeover of all buildings under AP’s control in Hyderabad and a comprehensive report on the pending asset distribution between the states. As AP leaders demand an extension of the joint capital status, the central government’s decision remains a point of interest.
