Tamron has recently expanded its lens lineup for Sony E-mount cameras with the addition of the 50-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD. This versatile zoom lens is designed for full-frame cameras such as the Sony A7 IV but can also be used with APS-C models like the Sony A6700, extending the zoom range to an impressive 75-450mm.
The new lens offers a wider reach at the low end compared to Tamron’s popular 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 lens from 2020 and features enhanced close focusing capabilities, achieving up to half life-size macro at the 50mm wide end. Despite these improvements, the lens size and weight remain almost unchanged, although the price has increased by approximately 25%, now retailing at $799 / £819 (Australian pricing yet to be confirmed).
Many consider the price increase justified due to the added versatility of the lens. Tamron lenses are typically priced significantly lower than Sony’s own lenses, with the closest Sony alternative, the FE 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 G OSS, costing 25% more than the new Tamron lens.
For travelers seeking a single, adaptable lens, the 50-300mm is a compelling option, covering a wide range of scenarios from portraits to macro photography and distant subjects. Although it doesn’t match the versatility of the recently announced Nikon 28-400mm lens, the Tamron lens is impressively compact at just 5.9 inches (150mm) and lightweight at 23.5 ounces (665g), making it a perfect fit for Sony’s mirrorless cameras.
Additionally, the lens is built to withstand various conditions with its moisture-resistant construction. It also features optical image stabilization (Vibration Compensation or VC) and a linear motor for quick and quiet autofocus (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive or VXD).
