Air Hostess on Ventilator Allegedly Sexually Assaulted at Gurugram’s Medanta Hospital; Incident Occurred in Presence of Two Nurses

Gurugram:

An air hostess alleged that she was sexually assaulted when she was on ventilator support in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a private hospital in Gurugram on April 6, police said.

According to the police, the matter came to light on April 13 when she told her husband about the sexual assault after her discharge, and he alerted the police.

Based on the 46-year-old woman’s complaint, a case was registered at the Sadar Police Station, and police are investigating the matter.

According to her police complaint, she had come to Gurugram for training on behalf of the company and was staying in a hotel. During this time, her health deteriorated due to a drowning incident, after which she was admitted to a private hospital for treatment.

After that, on April 5, her husband admitted her to another hospital in Gurugram for treatment. She was discharged from the hospital on April 13.

“During the treatment, on April 6, she was on a ventilator, during which some staff of the hospital sexually assaulted her. At that time, she was on a ventilator and could not speak and was very scared. She was also unconscious at the time of the incident, and two nurses were also around her,” the victim alleged in her complaint.

After being discharged, she told her husband about the sexual assault, and he informed the 112 police and then also complained to the police in front of the legal advisor.

“Following a complaint filed by the victim, a case has been registered at the Sadar Police Station, Gurugram. A police team was rushed to the hospital to scan the duty chart and analyse the CCTV footage to identify the accused,” Gurugram police spokesman Sandeep Kumar said.

The police team has taken further action in the case, and the statement of the accused has been recorded before the magistrate. The police team will soon identify the accused and arrest him accordingly,” he said.

The hospital authorities refused to comment on the matter. When the hospital’s security staff was contacted, they denied having any knowledge of the incident.

Trainee Flight Attendant Alleges Sexual Assault While on Ventilator Support at Gurugram Hospital

A 46-year-old woman, who had traveled to Gurugram from West Bengal for a flight attendant training workshop, has filed a police complaint alleging that she was sexually assaulted by a ward staffer while she was admitted to Medanta Hospital and on ventilator support earlier this month.

According to the complaint, the woman was undergoing training with a reputed airline when she nearly drowned during a swimming pool session, which was part of the program. She was rescued and immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital for emergency care. Due to the severity of her condition, she was later referred and shifted to Medanta Hospital, one of the largest private healthcare facilities in the region, where she was placed on a ventilator.

The woman, now conscious and recovering, has alleged that during her time in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), she was inappropriately touched and sexually assaulted by a hospital staff member. She claims she was in a semi-conscious state but aware enough to realize what was happening, though unable to physically resist or raise an alarm due to her medical condition.

Her husband, who had been staying nearby to monitor her health, helped her file the complaint after she shared her traumatic experience upon gaining full consciousness. A formal police case has been registered, and the investigation is underway.

Medanta Hospital has issued a public statement acknowledging the seriousness of the allegation. The hospital emphasized that the claims are yet to be substantiated and assured full cooperation with law enforcement authorities. “The matter is extremely sensitive, and a thorough investigation is essential before drawing conclusions. We are committed to the highest standards of patient care and safety and will fully support the legal process,” the statement read.

The police are examining CCTV footage, questioning staff, and verifying duty rosters to identify the accused. The identity of the ward staffer in question has not been publicly disclosed, pending further inquiry.

This incident has sparked outrage, particularly concerning the safety and vulnerability of patients in critical care units. Activists and the public have called for stricter monitoring protocols, background checks of hospital employees, and the urgent installation of surveillance cameras in ICUs—while balancing patient privacy—to ensure such incidents are prevented in the future.

Authorities have assured that the matter will be handled with sensitivity and impartiality, and if the allegations are proven true, strict legal action will be taken against the accused.
