Apple is reportedly seeking a partnership with a Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) firm to introduce its Apple Intelligence features in China. The Cupertino-based tech behemoth unveiled several AI-driven capabilities for iPhones at its annual developer conference, WWDC 2024, in collaboration with ChatGPT creator OpenAI. Given that ChatGPT is prohibited in China, Apple needs to identify a local AI chatbot to collaborate with Siri in managing AI-generated content requests.
As reported by The Wall Street Journal, Apple has engaged in discussions with Baidu, Alibaba Group, and the Beijing-based startup Baichuan AI. However, no agreements have been finalized between these companies, the report indicates.
Potential Limitations and Opportunities for Apple Intelligence in China
Restrictions on Apple Intelligence:
- Limited Availability: Apple Intelligence features might be accessible to only a select group of iPhone users. Initially, these features will be restricted to devices like the iPhone 15 Pro models and newer, as well as iPads and Macs equipped with Apple Silicon chips.
- Geographic Restrictions: Apple has announced that these features will not be available in countries within the European Union. Without a partnership with a Chinese AI company, these features might also be unavailable in China.
Benefits for Apple in China:
- Government Approval: China mandates that companies must obtain government approval before deploying chatbots powered by large language models. To date, no AI products developed outside China have been granted approval.
- Local Collaboration: Partnering with a Chinese AI company could help Apple navigate regulatory hurdles and bring its AI features to the Chinese market, potentially boosting its competitiveness and market presence in the region.
