In the third beta release of iOS 18.1 (along with iPadOS 18.1 and macOS 15.1), Apple debuts “Clean Up,” its version of Google’s Magic Eraser. Integrated into Apple’s Intelligence suite, this new feature lets users effortlessly remove unwanted objects from photos using AI.
Integrated into the native Photos app, Clean Up allows iPhone users to effortlessly remove distractions from their images. By simply circling or scribbling over unwanted elements, users can seamlessly erase them, with AI intelligently filling in the gaps to blend with the surrounding areas.
Apple’s Clean Up Feature: Limited Rollout and Future Enhancements
Google initially introduced its AI-driven Magic Eraser tool two years ago on Pixel phones. Since then, the feature has expanded to all Android devices and even iOS, through the Google Photos app.
Currently, Apple’s Clean Up feature is exclusive to U.S. users with iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models, M1-powered iPads and Macs, or newer devices.
iOS 18.1 Beta 3 also introduces several enhancements to Apple Intelligence. Notification summaries, which were previously restricted to Messages and Mail, are now extended to all apps, offering users a streamlined overview of their notifications at a glance.
Apple is anticipated to launch iOS 18 in September, alongside the release of the iPhone 16 series. However, Clean Up and additional Apple Intelligence features are scheduled to roll out in October with iOS 18.1.
