The Rise of Global Chess: Why Chess Is Becoming a Major International Sport and Business Introduction Chess is experiencing a major global resurgence in 2026, with the game attracting attention far beyond traditional chess communities. This month, the 2026 Chess Olympiad has begun in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, bringing together hundreds of teams from around the world. At the same time, professional chess leagues, online platforms, sponsorships and AI-powered chess tools are turning the ancient board game into a rapidly developing global industry. The growing popularity of chess is particularly visible in India, where young players and international champions have helped bring the sport into mainstream attention. The combination of competitive tournaments, digital platforms and technology is creating new opportunities for players, coaches, businesses and sponsors. The 2026 Chess Olympiad Brings Global Attention The Chess Olympiad is one of the biggest international team events in chess. The 2026 edition in Samarkand features 208 teams in the open section and 191 teams in the women's section. India, the United States, China and host Uzbekistan are among the teams attracting significant attention. Such large international events demonstrate how chess has developed from an individual board game into a major global sporting event. Global Chess League Creates a New Business Model Professional chess is increasingly adopting the franchise and league model used by other major sports. The Global Chess League has become an important example of this transformation. The 2026 season produced a particularly dramatic story when the Ganges Grandmasters faced an ownership crisis shortly before the auction but eventually won the championship. The situation highlighted how chess franchises are now operating with owners, coaches, players, media production and fan engagement—similar to professional sports organizations. Big Sponsorship Deals Are Changing Chess Chess is also attracting major corporate sponsors. One of the most significant recent developments is the announcement that Salesforce will become the title sponsor of the 2026 World Championship match between Gukesh and Javokhir Sindarov in Geneva. The reported three-year agreement is valued at $9 million. This demonstrates that major companies increasingly see chess as a valuable platform for reaching audiences interested in technology, intelligence, strategy and innovation. AI Is Transforming Chess Training Artificial intelligence has changed the way players study chess. Modern chess platforms can analyze games, identify mistakes and suggest stronger moves almost instantly. AI is also influencing chess coaching. Current coaching trends increasingly combine AI analysis with human trainers, allowing technology to identify weaknesses while coaches focus on strategy, confidence and long-term player development. Chess Is Becoming a Digital Business Online chess has created new revenue opportunities through subscriptions, tournaments, coaching, advertising and premium learning tools. Market research also projects continued growth in the broader chess market and online chess instruction sector. This means chess is no longer limited to physical boards and tournaments. It has become part of the digital entertainment and education economy. Conclusion Chess is entering an exciting new era. The combination of international tournaments, professional leagues, corporate sponsorships, online platforms and artificial intelligence is turning chess into a global sport and growing business ecosystem. The current chess boom shows that an ancient game can successfully adapt to modern technology and entertainment. As major tournaments and professional leagues continue to expand, chess is likely to attract even more players, viewers, sponsors and investors around the world. Chess
