BJP Seeks Rahul Gandhi’s Apology For “Politicising” Rohith Vemula’s Death

The BJP’s call for Rahul Gandhi’s apology for “politicizing” Rohith Vemula’s death is part of a broader political debate in India. Rohith Vemula, a PhD student at the University of Hyderabad, tragically died by suicide in January 2016, which sparked significant controversy and protests. Vemula was a member of the Ambedkar Students’ Association, and his death brought attention to issues of caste discrimination and the treatment of Dalit students in Indian educational institutions.

Pointing out that the Congress government is in power in Telangana.

Rahul Gandhi, a prominent leader of the Indian National Congress, has been vocal about the circumstances surrounding Vemula’s death. He has criticized the BJP and its allied student organizations, accusing them of fostering an environment that led to Vemula’s tragic decision. In response, the BJP has accused Gandhi of politicizing a sensitive issue for electoral gains and has demanded an apology.

This controversy reflects the ongoing political tensions between the Congress and the BJP, especially on issues related to social justice and caste discrimination. The debate continues to be a significant point of contention in Indian politics.

Pointing out that the Congress government is in power in Telangana, BJP asked: “Now that Telangana Police has filed a closure report in court, stating that Rohith Vemula was not a Dalit and his death was a suicide, will Rahul Gandhi apologise to the Dalits?”

Accusing Mr Gandhi of politicising the issue, BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya took to his official social media handle on X and shared a video of his speech in Lok Sabha.
