Harshika Poonacha Shares Her Lifelong Passion for Filmmaking and the Journey Toward Her Directorial Debut
Actress and new mother Harshika Poonacha is all set to make a comeback to the film industry, but this time, she is stepping into a new role—that of a director. She recently announced her directorial debut with the Kannada film Chi. Sowjanya, a project close to her heart. Passionate about storytelling that makes an impact, Harshika explains, “Bhuvan Ponnannaa (actor and my husband) and I have had plans for me to step into direction ever since we started our production house. Even back then, I was clear that I didn’t see myself directing a love story or an action film. As a woman, I want to tell stories that contribute to the cause of women.”
Her decision to take on direction stems from a desire to bring important social issues to light. She shares, “When I came across the story of Chi. Sowjanya, I felt it was a subject that could help in seeking justice for women who have been victims of sexual abuse and murder. It’s not based on any single real-life case, but it reflects the reality faced by countless women and their families. Every time such incidents happen, we ask ourselves why these things keep occurring and wonder if there’s anything we can do to stop them. This film is my way of making a difference.”
Harshika believes in the power of cinema to influence society, citing an example from Kannada cinema’s past. “I remember the impact of Bangarada Manushya, the film starring Dr. Rajkumar. It was released at a time when farming was looked down upon, and people were eager to leave villages for jobs in the city or abroad. But after watching that film, people’s perception of farmers changed. The role and the story had such a profound influence on people’s thinking. I don’t consider myself anywhere close to what Dr. Rajkumar achieved, but I do hope my film can bring a positive change in society,” she says.
Taking on the challenge of directing while being a new mother is no easy task, but Harshika is prepared. “This story is something that deeply affects me, and I feel now is the right time to tell it. If not now, then when? I have a strong support system at home, and my daughter will accompany me on set. I know stepping into direction, especially for a film with such a serious theme, is not easy, but I’m ready for it,” she shares.
She acknowledges that transitioning from an actress to a director is a significant shift and one that requires learning and adaptation. “I am not overly confident about my directorial skills, but I do believe that as a woman, and with my experiences as an actress, I can bring out emotions in a way only a woman can. There are certain nuances, feelings, and perspectives that I can infuse into my storytelling to make the film resonate deeply with audiences.”
Discussing the theme of her film, Harshika reiterates her commitment to addressing important social issues. “I want this film to spark conversations and hopefully encourage change. It’s painful to see stories of women facing violence, and I hope my film can serve as a voice for those who have suffered. It’s not just about showcasing their struggles but also about sending a message of strength and hope.”
Despite the challenges of taking on a new role, Harshika is excited about this new chapter in her career. “Directing is a whole new world for me, and I know there will be many obstacles along the way. But I thrive on challenges, and I am ready to take this one head-on. At the end of the day, if this film manages to touch even a few hearts and bring awareness to the issue, I will consider my effort worthwhile,” she concludes.
