IMAX Explained: Why IMAX Gives the Biggest, Brightest, and Best Movie Experience

IMAX is a premium cinema technology developed by IMAX Corporation. IMAX is known for its bigger screen, brighter picture, clearer sound, and deeper audience involvement. When you watch a movie in IMAX, you don’t just watch the film—you feel like you are inside the movie.

Let us first understand why IMAX looks better than standard cinema.

Film Size and Camera Difference

About 10 years ago, most movies were shot on 35 mm film. The practical image size of 35 mm film is around 24.90 mm, and the film travels vertically. Because of this smaller size, the amount of visual information captured is limited.

IMAX, on the other hand, uses 70 mm film, which travels horizontally. This is a very big difference. The actual IMAX film frame is almost 8 times larger than traditional cinema film. Because the film is bigger, it can capture taller frames, more details, and much higher clarity.

This is the main reason IMAX images look so sharp and realistic. Every small detail—faces, textures, background objects—looks clear and natural.

Resolution Power

IMAX 70 mm film can capture image quality equivalent to up to 18K resolution. This is far beyond what normal digital cameras capture. When compared practically, IMAX footage is almost 10 times larger and better than standard digital cinema footage.

This does not mean other cameras are bad. Cameras from ARRI, RED, and Sony are excellent. But IMAX stands at the top when it comes to image size, sharpness, and depth.

Aspect Ratio – Seeing More Image

Another major difference is aspect ratio.

  • IMAX aspect ratio: 1.43:1 (or 1.90:1 in digital IMAX)
  • Standard cinema aspect ratio: 2.39:1

Standard movies are very wide and are often cropped at the top and bottom. IMAX shows a taller image, meaning you see more picture, not just wider picture. In action scenes, city shots, or large landscapes, IMAX shows extra visual content that you cannot see in standard theaters.

That is why IMAX scenes feel bigger and more immersive.

IMAX Theater Experience

An IMAX theater is not just about the screen. It is a complete system:

  • Massive curved screen that fills your vision
  • High-brightness projectors
  • Powerful, custom-tuned sound system
  • Perfect seating angle for immersion

The sound in IMAX theaters is designed so that you feel every explosion, dialogue, and background music clearly. The audience feels fully involved in the movie.

History of IMAX

IMAX was first introduced in 1967 in Canada. The first IMAX film technology showed people a completely new way of watching movies. From that moment, IMAX changed cinema forever.

IMAX Cameras – Why They Are Special

IMAX cameras are very different from normal cameras. The main differences are:

  1. Film Size – 70 mm film
  2. Resolution – Extremely high (up to 18K equivalent)
  3. Sound and Mechanical Design

Each IMAX camera can carry up to 1,000 feet of film, depending on the model. These cameras are huge, heavy, and very loud. Because of this, they are difficult to use during normal dialogue scenes.

Only a few great directors use IMAX cameras, including James Cameron and Zack Snyder.

Why IMAX Is Very Expensive

There are many reasons why IMAX is costly:

  1. Very Few Cameras
There are only about 26 IMAX cameras in the world. Manufacturing one IMAX camera is extremely expensive.
  2. Heavy and Loud Equipment
IMAX cameras are hard to handle, making filming more complex.
  3. Film Roll Cost
IMAX film stock is very expensive. Directors must plan every shot carefully. Every second of film matters.
  4. Massive Storage Needs
One IMAX film can take terabytes of data. Editing, storing, and transferring this data requires powerful systems.
  5. Limited Reachability
IMAX theaters are limited in number. Not every city has a true IMAX screen.

IMAX Shot vs IMAX Enhanced

There is a difference between:

  • Movies shot with IMAX cameras
  • Movies digitally enhanced for IMAX screens

Movies like Salaar may be optimized for IMAX screens, but only selected scenes may use true IMAX aspect ratio. True IMAX-shot movies give the best IMAX experience.

Why IMAX Feels Unique

IMAX does not show its full beauty on mobile screens or TVs. The unique aspect ratio, tall frames, and massive scale can only be experienced inside an IMAX theater.

That is why people say:
IMAX is not just a format, it is an experience.

Final Words

IMAX gives the maximum movie experience because of its larger film size, higher resolution, taller frames, and powerful sound. It is expensive due to rare cameras, costly film, massive data needs, and limited theaters—but the result is worth it.
