India’s Involvement in Controversies Surrounding Champions Trophy

Controversy Surrounding Champions Trophy in Pakistan and UAE

A new controversy has emerged regarding the upcoming Champions Trophy, which is scheduled to take place in Pakistan and the UAE from February to March. According to sources from the Times of India (TOI), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) does not want its players to wear jerseys displaying the name of Pakistan, the host nation, on them.

BCCI’s Refusal to Send Rohit Sharma to Pakistan

The BCCI has also insisted that captain Rohit Sharma will not travel to Pakistan for the captain’s press conference or the official photo shoot. A BCCI source confirmed that the board has requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to move these events, which are set to occur just before the tournament starts on February 19, from Pakistan to Dubai. The source added, “ICC has already accommodated India’s request to not schedule its Champions Trophy matches in Pakistan, so these are minor issues.”

Pakistan Cricket Board’s Displeasure

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has expressed displeasure over BCCI’s recent demands. A PCB official, speaking anonymously, stated, “The BCCI is mixing politics with cricket, which is detrimental to the game. They refused to travel to Pakistan, do not want to send their captain for the opening ceremony, and now there are reports suggesting that they do not want the host nation’s name on their jerseys. We believe that the ICC will not allow this and will support Pakistan.”

Breach of ICC’s Clothing Code

Under ICC regulations, India’s refusal to wear the official logo of the host nation, Pakistan, would violate the clothing code for ICC tournaments. It is customary for teams to feature the name of the host nation on their jerseys, even when the tournament is being held in a different country. For instance, during the 2021 T20 World Cup held in the UAE, Pakistan’s jersey displayed India’s name, even though the event took place outside India. Similarly, Pakistan wore India’s name on their jerseys during the 2016 T20 World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup.

BCCI’s Decision Fuels Tensions with PCB

This decision from the BCCI is likely to escalate the already strained relationship between the BCCI and PCB. The BCCI has already announced that it will not travel to Pakistan, with India playing its matches in the UAE instead.
