Emergency Day 1 Box Office Early Estimates: Kangana Ranaut’s Film Opens to a Slow Start, Earns ₹1 Lakh from Morning Shows
Kangana Ranaut’s highly anticipated political drama Emergency has had a slow start at the box office, according to early estimates. The film, which hit theatres after months of delays, is projected to earn just around ₹1 lakh from its early morning shows on opening day, as per Sacnilk. However, based on advance ticket sales, Emergency is expected to gain momentum throughout the day and could potentially become one of Kangana’s best post-COVID openings.
Before the pandemic, Kangana’s films enjoyed strong openings and notable box office performances, but her recent releases have struggled to attract audiences, resulting in underwhelming numbers. Industry analysts predict that Emergency might follow a similar trend. Despite its slow start, the film’s opening day collection is projected to reach ₹2-3 crore net in India, with the possibility of surpassing her previous release, Tejas, which opened at ₹1.25 crore in 2023.
The film’s release on January 17 coincides with Cinema Lovers Day, during which selected theatres are offering discounted tickets. Kangana took to social media to announce, “Watch Emergency at ₹99,” an initiative expected to provide a slight boost to ticket sales. While the film’s pre-sales figures have outperformed its competitor Azaad, starring debutants Aaman Devgan and Rasha Thadani, overall pre-sales for both films have been modest.
Directed and co-produced by Kangana Ranaut, Emergency explores the 21-month period of political turmoil from 1975 to 1977. The film features an ensemble cast, including Kangana as Indira Gandhi, Shreyas Talpade as a young Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Mahima Chaudhary as Pupul Jayakar, and the late Satish Kaushik as Jagjivan Ram. Despite facing stiff competition, Emergency remains the frontrunner in advance bookings, though the overall competition may impact its earnings.
