Kantara 1 Filming Sparks Controversy

Rishab Shetty’s ‘Kantara: Chapter 1’ Shoot Faces Backlash Over Environmental Damage and Local Clashes

The filming of Rishab Shetty’s highly anticipated movie Kantara: Chapter 1 has sparked significant controversy following allegations from residents of Heruru village in Karnataka. Locals claim the crew has caused environmental damage during the shoot in the Gavigudda forest area, allegedly exceeding their permitted boundaries.

According to a report by India Today, the production team had received permission to shoot on village grazing land but reportedly extended their activities into protected forest zones. The use of explosives during the shoot has further alarmed residents, who are concerned about the potential harm to local wildlife.

Tensions escalated when locals confronted the crew over the explosives, leading to a heated argument. During the altercation, a local youth named Harish was allegedly assaulted by crew members and subsequently hospitalized with injuries.

Former Zilla Panchayat member Sanna Swamy criticized the filming activities, stating they were endangering the region’s animals and birds. He highlighted the struggles faced by farmers due to frequent wild elephant attacks and accused officials of failing to safeguard the forest ecosystem.

The backlash from the community has been swift, with locals demanding that the filming be relocated and calling for accountability from those involved. A case has been registered at Yesalur Police Station, and residents have warned they will escalate the matter to the High Court if their concerns are not addressed.

Kantara: Chapter 1 is a prequel to the critically acclaimed Kantara (2022), known for its unique blend of folklore and environmental themes. The new film is slated for a theatrical release on October 2, 2025, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti.
