During an interaction, Virat Kohli revealed that MS Dhoni was the only person who reached out to him during his tough times, highlighting the strong bond and mutual respect between the two cricketing legends.
MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli’s Special Bond
Former India captain MS Dhoni has opened up about his relationship with star batter Virat Kohli. While their on-field camaraderie is well known, Dhoni has admitted that he is not great at staying in touch with people off the field. Many of his past and present teammates have spoken about how difficult it is to reach him when he is not playing cricket. However, with Kohli, Dhoni shares a special bond.
This connection became evident when Dhoni sent a heartfelt message to Kohli after the latter decided to step down as India’s Test captain in January 2022, following the South Africa tour. Kohli later revealed that Dhoni was the only one who reached out to him during that tough time. This gesture highlighted the respect and mutual understanding between the two cricketing legends.
Kohli’s Revelation About Dhoni’s Support
During an interaction, Virat Kohli spoke about the emotional moment when he received a message from MS Dhoni after resigning from Test captaincy. Kohli emphasized that, despite many having his number, only Dhoni personally reached out to check on him.
“Let me tell you one thing: when I left Test captaincy, I got a message from only one person, with whom I had played previously; that was MS Dhoni. Many people have my number. On TV, people give lots of suggestions; people have a lot to say. But none of the people who had my number sent me a message,” Kohli revealed.
This statement shed light on the contrast between public criticism and genuine support. While many former cricketers and analysts were quick to give opinions on his leadership and form, Dhoni’s personal message stood out as a sign of true camaraderie.
Dhoni’s Response and Perspective
Now, Dhoni has shared his perspective on the special bond he shares with Kohli. In a viral video, a fan asked Dhoni about his equation with Kohli during an event. Dhoni acknowledged that he is not great at staying in touch with people but makes an effort when it truly matters.
“It’s déjà vu. I was asked a similar question recently; you will see the answer during the IPL. I’m not great when it comes to being in touch with people, but yeah, certain times when someone needs you, you just drop in a message,” Dhoni said in the video.
Kohli, in a 2022 interview, elaborated on his connection with Dhoni, explaining that their relationship is built on mutual respect and honesty. He highlighted that there is no insecurity between them, which is why their bond remains strong.
“That respect [with Dhoni], that connection you have with someone, when it is genuine, it shows like this because there is no insecurity with either of us. Neither does he [Dhoni] need anything from me, nor do I need anything from him. Neither of us suffers from insecurity,” Kohli explained.
Kohli further stressed the importance of personal, private gestures over public advice. He expressed that genuine concern is shown through direct communication rather than through media statements.
“I mean, if you give the suggestions to the world, it has no value for me. If it is for my improvement, you can talk with me one-on-one, (tell me) that I genuinely want you to do well. I live life with a lot of honesty, so I can see through such things. I am not saying that it doesn’t matter to me, but you see the real thing,” Kohli added.
This exchange between Dhoni and Kohli showcases their deep-rooted connection and respect for each other, built over years of playing together and leading Indian cricket. Their bond is a testament to the values of honesty, support, and mutual admiration in the world of sports.
