Nelson Dilipkumar, the director behind the 2023 blockbuster ‘Jailer’ featuring superstar Rajinikanth, recently shared insights into the iconic smoking scene that has captivated audiences. In a conversation with Behindwoods, when presented with a photo from the film showcasing Rajinikanth in a smoking pose reminiscent of his earlier films, Nelson expressed his admiration for the shot’s aesthetic. He praised the cinematography, noting the exceptional lighting and mood, alongside Rajinikanth’s inimitable style. Nelson revealed that this shot was captured during the final ten days of shooting and became a personal favorite, often revisiting the image on his phone.
Highlighting the significance of reintroducing Rajinikanth in such a classic pose after years, Nelson acknowledged drawing inspiration from the actor’s 1995 hit ‘Baashha’ among others, aiming to do justice to the iconic moment. Rajinikanth had initially been hesitant, suggesting the scene should only be included if it served the film’s narrative. The turning point came with Mohanlal and Shiva Rajkumar’s action-packed cameos, which set the stage for Rajinikanth’s character to reprise his signature smoking scene, ensuring its relevance and impact on the storyline. Nelson felt confident about the scene’s theatrical impact, recognizing its importance in the film’s overall appeal.
