Oats Thoran Recipe

Oats Thoran is a healthy and delicious South Indian dish made with oats, coconut, and spices.

Here simple recipe to make oats thoran:

Ingredients:

  • Oats: 1 cup
  • Grated coconut: ½ cup
  • Green chilies: 2-3, finely chopped
  • Shallots: 4-5, finely chopped (or 1 small onion)
  • Curry leaves: 1 sprig
  • Mustard seeds: ½ tsp
  • Cumin seeds: ½ tsp
  • Turmeric powder: ¼ tsp
  • Red chili powder (optional): ¼ tsp
  • Coconut oil: 1 tbsp
  • Salt: to taste

Instructions:

  1. Roast the Oats:
    • In a dry pan, roast the oats on low heat for 3-4 minutes until they slightly change color and give off a nutty aroma. Set aside to cool.
  2. Prepare the Coconut Mixture:
    • In a mixing bowl, combine the grated coconut, green chilies, and turmeric powder. Mix well.
  3. Cook the Thoran:
    • Heat coconut oil in a pan.
    • Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
    • Add cumin seeds, chopped shallots, and curry leaves. Sauté until the shallots turn soft and slightly golden.
    • Add the prepared coconut mixture and sauté for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add the Oats:
    • Add the roasted oats to the pan and mix well.
    • Sprinkle some water (2-3 tbsp) to slightly soften the oats. Cook for 2-3 minutes on low heat while stirring occasionally.
  5. Season and Serve:
    • Add salt to taste and mix thoroughly.
    • Remove from heat and serve warm as a healthy side dish or a light meal.
