On Monday, the Supreme Court will hear Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal’s plea challenging a high court’s decision to uphold his arrest in a money-laundering case related to the alleged excise policy scam. Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta will preside over the matter. Kejriwal’s petition contesting the Delhi High Court’s April 9 order will be heard on April 15 by the same bench, according to the cause list on the apex court’s website.
Legal Proceedings Regarding Arvind Kejriwal’s Custody:
- Arvind Kejriwal faced initial remand to six days of ED custody on March 22, later extended by four days.
- Subsequently, on April 1, he was remanded to judicial custody until April 15.
- Currently in judicial custody, Kejriwal has challenged both his arrest and subsequent remand by the ED in the case.
The high court dealt a significant blow to the chief minister by upholding his arrest in the money-laundering case. It stated that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had “little option” left, as the chief minister had repeatedly ignored summonses and declined to participate in the investigation.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader’s petition challenging his arrest by the ED and subsequent remand in the federal agency’s custody was dismissed by the high court. The case involves alleged corruption and money laundering related to the formulation and execution of the Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22, which was subsequently scrapped. Kejriwal’s arrest by the ED on March 21 came shortly after the high court declined to provide protection from coercive action by the federal anti-money laundering agency.
