Tata Motors to Pilot Hydrogen Trucks on Key Routes Under Green Hydrogen Mission
New Delhi: Tata Motors is set to begin testing trucks powered by hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2-ICE) as part of a pilot program in the upcoming March quarter, according to a senior company executive.
This initiative, aligned with the National Green Hydrogen Mission, will see Tata Motors collaborating with IOCL to operate these trucks on three specific routes for a duration of 18 months.
At the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, held last week, Tata Motors showcased its hydrogen-powered truck with an internal combustion engine.
Girish Wagh, Executive Director at Tata Motors, stated that the company is preparing to embrace both hydrogen-based technologies — hydrogen internal combustion engines and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles.
The trucks utilizing H2-ICE technology are expected to begin operations this quarter on routes including Mumbai-Pune, Jamshedpur-Kalinganagar, and Mumbai-Ahmedabad.
According to Wagh, the pilot program aims to generate extensive data, which will be crucial in enhancing both the vehicles and hydrogen refueling infrastructure.
Speaking at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 in the capital on Friday, Wagh also highlighted that Tata Motors has already been running 15 hydrogen fuel cell buses in collaboration with IOCL for over 10 months.
He added that the company is advancing efforts across the hydrogen value chain and is preparing for the commercial launch of hydrogen vehicles within the next 12 to 24 months, with expectations of additional support.
Tata Motors is revamping its commercial vehicle segment, focusing on sustainability, safety, and leveraging digital solutions along with Artificial Intelligence to enhance its offerings.
