Tennis world number one Jannik Sinner has been cleared of any wrongdoing for two anti-doping violations earlier this season, despite initially failing anti-doping tests. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced Tuesday that the 23-year-old Italian player was exonerated by an independent tribunal after a thorough investigation. The decision marks a significant moment in Sinner’s career, as the ruling ensures his reputation remains intact despite the doping controversy.
The situation arose when Sinner provided an in-competition sample during the Indian Wells Masters on March 10, 2024, which tested positive for low levels of a metabolite of clostebol, a substance banned under the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme (TADP). A second sample, taken eight days later out of competition, also revealed the presence of the same metabolite. Despite these findings, the ITIA’s investigation concluded that Sinner bore no fault or negligence for the anti-doping violations, clearing him of any intentional wrong doing.

According to the ITIA, the banned substance was traced back to a contamination incident involving a member of Sinner’s support team. The team member had been using an over-the-counter spray containing clostebol, available in Italy, to treat a small wound. This spray was applied between March 5-13, during which time the support team member also provided daily massages and sports therapy to Sinner, leading to inadvertent contamination.
In its official statement, the ITIA confirmed that an independent tribunal, convened by Sport Resolutions, ruled in favor of Sinner. The tribunal’s decision absolved him of any fault or negligence in relation to the anti-doping violations. However, despite being cleared of wrongdoing, Sinner will still face the consequences as per anti-doping regulations. He will be stripped of his results, prize money, and ranking points earned at the Indian Wells tournament.
Reflecting on the outcome, Sinner expressed relief at being cleared and reiterated his commitment to moving forward. “I will now put this challenging and deeply unfortunate period behind me,” Sinner stated on X. He emphasized his dedication to complying with the ITIA’s anti-doping program and ensuring that his team adheres strictly to all regulations. Sinner’s focus now is on his future in tennis, as he aims to maintain his position as the world’s top player.
