Upendra Rao Expresses Interest in Creating a Hindi Remake of His Classic Film Upendra
Veteran Kannada actor and filmmaker Upendra Rao is riding high on the success of his latest film, UI, acclaimed for its groundbreaking cinematic approach. In an interview with India Today, he shared insights on Kannada cinema’s evolution and announced plans to remake his 1999 classic, Upendra, in Hindi.
Reflecting on the industry’s transformation, Upendra highlighted the shift from quick, low-budget productions—where songs were shot in mere days—to sophisticated films utilizing advanced VFX and technology. He attributed this progress to technological advancements and the rise of pan-Indian cinema, a trend he lauded for bridging linguistic barriers and uniting diverse audiences.
Upendra explained that pan-Indian cinema allows filmmakers to create multilingual versions of their movies simultaneously, reaching a broader audience. While thrilling, he admitted the process presents unique challenges. He also expressed pride in Kannada cinema’s growing prominence, noting its ability to draw larger audiences and achieve national recognition.
The actor addressed an unfinished Bollywood project with Amitabh Bachchan’s production house. He explained that commitments to Kannada and Telugu films had forced him to focus on one language at a time, causing the Bollywood collaboration to take a backseat.
When asked which of his works he’d like to adapt for Hindi audiences, Upendra cited Upendra. He emphasized the film’s enduring relevance and futuristic themes, which continue to captivate audiences across generations. “It’s the perfect film for a Hindi remake,” he asserted confidently.
As UI garners praise and Kannada cinema rises to new heights, Upendra remains a visionary force, blending innovation with cultural authenticity to push the boundaries of storytelling.
