Wade likely to skip GT’s opener to participate in Shield final

Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade is poised to sit out Gujarat Titans’ opening match of IPL 2024 as he prioritizes the Sheffield Shield final. Tasmania, likely hosts of the final from March 21-25, clash with Titans’ first game against Mumbai Indians slated for March 24.

Should the Shield final extend to the last day, Wade’s chances for the second game against Chennai Super Kings on March 26 also diminish. Tasmania’s head coach Jeff Vaughan confirmed Wade’s decision, stating, “He’s spoken with his IPL franchise and they’re happy to allow him to stay here, which probably equates to him potentially missing their first game.”

Wade has been a fixture in the Titans squad since their debut season in 2022, contributing to their title win that year despite not keeping wicket. He missed the last season where Titans were runners-up.
