Former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood will lead Pakistan as head coach for the upcoming series against New Zealand, which includes a five-match T20I series in Rawalpindi and Lahore.
Wahab Riaz has been appointed as the senior team manager, while Mohammad Yousuf and Saeed Ajmal will serve as the batting and bowling coaches, respectively.
Pakistan had been searching for a full-time head coach, considering Shane Watson at one point. Mahmood’s current term is only for the upcoming tour. He previously served as the national team’s bowling coach until 2019 and has coached in the Pakistan Super League.
Since the departure of Grant Bradburn and Micky Arthur, Pakistan has been without a full-time coach.
Azhar Mahmood named Pakistan’s head coach for NZ Series
The appointment of Azhar Mahmood, along with Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Yousuf, and Saeed Ajmal, brings a blend of experience and expertise to the coaching staff. Mahmood’s familiarity with the team and the domestic cricket scene could prove beneficial in strategizing against New Zealand, a team known for its strong performances in the shortest format of the game.
Pakistan’s decision to appoint Mahmood for this series suggests a strategic approach, focusing on the immediate challenges posed by New Zealand. It also indicates a potential shift in the team’s coaching structure, as they continue to seek stability and excellence in their cricketing endeavors.
