By 2025 Oscars Predictions: Can Indian Cinema Shine on Hollywood’s Grandest Stage?
Hollywood’s awards season faces major disruption as wildfires in Los Angeles delay Oscar nominations, now scheduled for January 23, following previous postponements. To accommodate affected Academy members, voting deadlines have been extended, and nominations will be announced via a virtual presentation. This year’s awards promise to showcase a diverse range of global voices, stories, and talents.
The Academy has shortlisted 323 feature films for the 2025 Oscars, including 207 competing for Best Picture. Among them, eight films either set in India or created by Indian talents vie for nominations. These include Kanguva (Tamil), Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life, Hindi), Santosh (Hindi), All We Imagine as Light (Malayalam-Hindi), Girls Will Be Girls (Hindi-English), Putul (Bengali), and Anuja (Hindi).
Industry experts remain cautious about India’s chances in main categories despite strong entries. GK Desai points out the Oscars’ preference for Western narratives but highlights Anuja and Santosh as notable contenders. Anuja, produced by Oscar-winner Guneet Monga and supported by Priyanka Chopra and Mindy Kaling, carries significant momentum.
