Wankhede Stadium is likely to host the Ranji Trophy final

The Ranji Trophy 2023-24 final is set to be held at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is considering staging the prestigious clash at the revered South Bombay venue, known for hosting major events, including the 2011 World Cup final.

An MCA official confirmed to Cricbuzz that Wankhede Stadium is likely to be the venue, with a final decision expected within the next 24 hours. This decision follows Mumbai’s commanding victory over Tamil Nadu in the semifinal, securing their 48th appearance in the Ranji final.

MCA secretary Ajinkya Naik later confirmed that Wankhede will host the final, citing its historical significance to Mumbai cricket. The opponents for the final will be the winners of the ongoing second semifinal between Vidarbha and Madhya Pradesh.

The MCA had considered the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) as an alternative venue, which has hosted Mumbai’s home games except for one match. However, the management appears to have favored Wankhede, recognizing the importance of the final as the pinnacle contest in Indian domestic cricket.

Mumbai has a remarkable record in the Ranji Trophy, having won the title 41 times. Wankhede Stadium has previously hosted the Ranji final on 11 occasions. This season marks the 89th edition of the Ranji Trophy.
