Apple’s much-awaited augmented reality (AR) smart glasses remain a work in progress, with the tech giant reportedly addressing four key challenges. These hurdles have delayed the launch to around 2028, while competitors like Meta (formerly Facebook) and Google continue to advance in the field.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s AR glasses development has encountered major setbacks. The company is grappling with four critical challenges: designing lightweight glasses, achieving adequate battery life, integrating high-resolution displays, and setting a competitive price.

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg highlights the significant challenges Apple faces in its AR glasses journey. “The company must tackle a tough equation: bringing a lightweight design to market with optimal battery performance and immersive displays — all at a price accessible to consumers,” he stated.
While Apple remains committed to developing its AR glasses, Gurman noted that a launch is unlikely anytime soon.
“If Apple fails to achieve this balance, there’s little reason to release a product under its brand,” he explained. “It wouldn’t be surprising if Apple takes an additional three to five years to refine its approach. This delay may seem surprising, especially considering the rapid progress being made by Meta Platforms Inc., Google, Xreal Inc., and other leaders in the AR space,” he added.
