The inaugural PC simulator arriving on iPhone, iPad, and Vision Pro

Apple has given the green light to the initial PC emulator app, UTM SE, for its App Store, signifying a major achievement for iPhone, iPad, and Vision Pro enthusiasts. UTM SE allows users to operate vintage software and games on their Apple devices, offering a fresh dimension of flexibility and nostalgia.

Originally turned down by Apple in June and prohibited from being notarized for third-party app stores in the EU, UTM SE encountered numerous obstacles. The developer, initially disheartened, referred to the app as “a subpar experience” back then. Nevertheless, determination and teamwork bore fruit. Today, UTM expressed gratitude to the AltStore team for their support and acknowledged another developer for a key QEMU TCTI implementation, essential for the app’s JIT-less build.

UTM SE: A New Era of PC Emulation on Apple Devices

A screenshot from UTM SE showcases options for creating a new virtual machine or downloading a prebuilt one. Although UTM SE does not come with any preloaded virtual machines, it aids users in locating them. Similar to other emulators on the App Store, UTM SE offers limited functionality out of the box, as it does not include any operating systems. However, it provides links to UTM’s website, which contains guides for emulating operating systems from Windows XP to Windows 11 and offers pre-built virtual Linux machines for download.

App Description

UTM SE is a PC emulator that enables you to run classic software and retro games on your Apple devices.

  • Supports both VGA mode for graphics and terminal mode for text-only operating systems.
  • Emulates x86, PPC, and RISC-V architectures.
  • Run pre-built machines or create your own configuration from scratch.
  • Built from QEMU, a powerful and widely used emulator.

With Apple’s approval, UTM SE is now available on iPhone, iPad, and Vision Pro, enhancing the capabilities of these devices and giving users the opportunity to revisit classic computing experiences. This approval marks a significant milestone for emulation on Apple platforms and opens up new possibilities for enthusiasts and developers alike.
