What makes the achievement even more remarkable is the speed: Lokah needed around 45 days to reach ₹300 crore, while Bethlehem Kudumba Unit achieved it in only 24 days.
Bethlehem Kudumba Unit creates Malayalam box-office history
Girish AD’s Bethlehem Kudumba Unit has become the latest industry hit in Malayalam cinema. The film reportedly crossed ₹300 crore worldwide on its 24th day, eventually reaching an estimated worldwide gross of around ₹305 crore. This pushed it past Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, which finished its theatrical run at approximately ₹302.65 crore.
The achievement makes Bethlehem Kudumba Unit only the second Malayalam film to enter the ₹300 crore worldwide club, but it has done so considerably faster than its predecessor.
For an industry known for content-driven cinema and relatively modest budgets, the speed of this achievement is particularly noteworthy.
24 days versus Lokah’s 45 days
The biggest part of the new record is the time taken to reach the ₹300 crore milestone.
Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra took approximately 45 days to cross ₹300 crore worldwide. Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, meanwhile, needed only 24 days. That is a difference of 21 days, meaning the Nivin Pauly starrer reached the milestone three weeks faster.
The comparison shows just how extraordinary the film’s theatrical momentum has been.
Lokah had itself rewritten Malayalam box-office history when it became the first Malayalam film to cross ₹300 crore. Less than a year later, that record has already changed hands.
Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju lead the historic run
The success of Bethlehem Kudumba Unit has given both Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju another major commercial achievement.
Directed by Girish AD and produced by Bhavana Studios, the film combines romance, family emotions, nostalgia and humour. Nivin Pauly plays Justin, while Mamitha Baiju portrays Ashley.
The story revolves around Ashley and her family moving into a new neighbourhood, where she develops a relationship with Justin. The film uses this central romance to explore family bonds, memories, relationships and personal choices.
The relatively grounded premise has connected strongly with audiences, helping the film generate excellent word of mouth.
Kerala becomes the film’s biggest strength
One of the major reasons behind the film’s record-breaking run has been its extraordinary performance in Kerala.
Reports indicate that Bethlehem Kudumba Unit had collected around ₹134 crore in Kerala by Day 23, making it the highest-grossing Malayalam film in the state as well. It overtook Vaazha II: Biopic of a Billion Bros, which had previously been reported at around ₹126–130 crore in Kerala.
The film’s performance in Kerala has remained remarkably strong even during weekdays.
This kind of sustained home-state performance provided a powerful foundation for the movie’s worldwide success, while its overseas collections added another major layer to the total.
Overseas collections also play a crucial role
Bethlehem Kudumba Unit has not depended solely on the Kerala market.
According to Sacnilk figures cited by Cinema Express, after 23 days the film had earned approximately ₹165.60 crore from India and ₹132.50 crore overseas, taking its worldwide gross to around ₹298.10 crore.
The overseas contribution is especially significant because it represented almost 44% of the reported worldwide total at that stage.
This shows that the film has travelled well beyond its core Malayalam audience and found a substantial international market.
The film crossed other milestones before ₹300 crore
The ₹300 crore achievement was not the film’s first major box-office milestone.
Bethlehem Kudumba Unit reportedly crossed ₹100 crore worldwide within five days and reached the ₹200 crore worldwide mark in just 12 days. It also entered the ₹100 crore India net club during its second week.
That rapid progression explains why trade observers began considering the film a potential industry hit relatively early in its run.
By Day 14, reports had already placed its India net collection above ₹100 crore, while the worldwide gross had moved beyond ₹229 crore.
From there, the film maintained its momentum and ultimately reached the ₹300 crore mark on Day 24.
A remarkable third weekend
Another indication of the film’s staying power came during its third weekend.
Pinkvilla reported that Bethlehem Kudumba Unit recorded one of the biggest third weekends for a Malayalam film, with its Kerala gross reaching approximately ₹138.5 crore in 24 days.
Usually, films experience a significant decline after two weeks as newer releases take over screens.
In this case, however, audience demand remained strong enough for the film to continue recording impressive numbers well into its fourth week.
That longevity has been one of the defining characteristics of its theatrical run.
Lokah’s reign ends sooner than expected
The rise of Bethlehem Kudumba Unit also brings an unexpectedly quick end to Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra‘s reign at the top.
