In the upcoming special assembly session on Tuesday, the Shinde government plans to introduce a bill granting a 10% reservation to Marathas in government jobs and education, according to sources. This decision follows a report by the state Backward Class commission, which has determined that the Maratha community is socially and educationally backward, as reported by Priyanka Kakodkar. While participating in the birth anniversary celebrations of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Pune’s Shivneri fort, Chief Minister Shinde indicated the possibility of a separate quota for Marathas. He assured that such a quota “will make sure… the existing quota of other communities will not be disturbed.” An official clarified that the government aims to keep the quota below 12-13% as per the Bombay High Court’s previous agreement, which was in place before the Supreme Court scrapped the quota. This marks the third instance in a decade where the state is introducing legislation for the Maratha quota.
